Suryavanshi’s new record, which also includes the names of two Bangladeshis
Suryavanshi, who created a stir in the 2025 IPL, is now on a tour of England for the India Under-19 team. The first of the two-match youth test series began in Beckenham on Saturday. Suryavanshi achieved the feat with the ball on the second day of play yesterday.
Although better known as a left-handed batsman, Suryavanshi is also a left-arm spinner. Yesterday, when India was unable to break England’s third wicket partnership, captain Ayush Mahatre handed the ball to Suryavanshi. The result was not long in coming. The last ball of Suryavanshi’s third over was caught by England’s Hamza Sheikh while playing a big shot at long off. Hamza and Rocky Flintoff’s 154-run partnership was broken. Hamza had to return with the regret of missing a century for 16 runs.
Suryavanshi, who dismissed Hamza for 84 runs, is now India’s youngest wicket-taker in a youth Test. His official age on the day he took the wicket was 14 years and 107 days. According to Wisden, the record for the youngest wicket-taker for India in a youth Test since records were kept was held by Manish, who took his first wicket against the South Africa Under-19 team in Thiruvananthapuram in 2019 at the age of 15 years and 115 days.
The record for the youngest wicket-taker in a youth Test, however, is not Suryavanshi’s, but that of Pakistan’s Mahmud Malik. Mahmud, who never made it to the Pakistan team, took a wicket against New Zealand in 1994 at the age of 13 years and 241 days. There is also a Pakistani in the second place. Leg-spinner Hidayatullah Khan took a wicket against Sri Lanka in 2003 at the age of 13 years and 251 days, but he also never played international cricket.
